New Orleans, LA (October 2006)

Zen attended the conference of the American Society of Human Genetics at New Orleans, Louisiana. We decided to go there by car, and it was our longest road trip yet.

New Orleans is more than nine hundred miles away from Iowa City, and it would take about fifteen hours to get there if driven straight. We left Iowa on Sunday morning and rested overnight at Horn Lake, Mississippi. We checked in at New Orleans Monday afternoon and stayed in the city for four days. We were able to visit some popular attractions such as the Riverwalk and the French

Vx

I give my Vx five stars as it turns five years old. How time flies... I still remember August 2001, after months of thinking and hesitation, I decided to buy my first PDA. The Vx was the slimmest PDA in Palm's line-up at the time. All I wanted was a digital directory and notepad to replace the ever-thickening paper notes in my organizer. (Yeah, you should have seen how cluttered my organizer was before.) It should also be easy to carry, so I can bring up any info wherever and whenever I want. The Vx was really the right choice because of its light weight and small form. It had such excellent battery-life that I was able to bring the Vx on a weeklong vacation and use it normally without losing power. It performed the functions I expected it to do and much more. It's simple yet powerful. The applications I use most often, i.e. the address book, memo, date book, happy days, today, and others, still run well on it.

The Vx is antique compared to today's tech, but it deserves t...

Good News Pilipinas

Why GNP? *

Good News Pilipinas is a plain and simple, feel good website. It's a source of information that will make every Filipino feel proud and smile, that yes indeed we have achieved a lot as a people, and continue to be successful in various sectors in our very own country and overseas.

GNP has no agenda! All we want is just to tell the whole world that the Philippines is a big beautiful country and that the Filipino is hospitable, talented, smart, and resourceful.

GNP stands for:
Great Nation of Pinoys
Gratifying Nice Positive
Giving Noble Positive
Gracious Noteworthy Precious
Genuine Notable Pure

Let's be positive about our country! Let's move forward as a people! Let's help our nation be great!

Thanksgiving Day (11/24/2005)

It's my first ever thanksgiving celebration! Zen and I started the day with a mass at 9:00 A.M. in the Newman Center, Iowa City. We were invited by "Tito Leo" Lim a week earlier to celebrate with them, so we drove seventeen miles north to Swisher, IA. We left Coralville twenty minutes before 2:00 P.M., and we were at the Lim residence by the top of the hour. We had an interesting exchange of life stories with the Lim's while having some snacks. A while later, I was helping them prepare the turkey (my first again) for the early dinner. There were just five of us, but we had so much fun, and our hosts were so hospitable that we didn't notice it was almost 9:00 P.M. We met the Lim couple for the first time during a Filipino-American get-together early this year only, but our celebration seemed to be like a gathering of long lost relatives and was itself a cause for thanksgiving.

Downtown Chicago (07/05/2005)

Zen's still in the process of changing her last name to her married name. One of the documents that needed ammendments was her passport, and so we went to the nearest Philippine Consulate General in the midwest -- in Chicago, Illinois!

Using Google Maps, we estimated a 226-mile trip in four hours to downtown Chicago. We left Coralville before 6:00AM to reach the consulate upon opening.

The trip was exciting as it was our first time to drive across different states. Cruise control helped a lot in the long freeway stretches, especially in maintaing the legal speed. Everything seemed to be easy, until we reached the highways of metropolitan Chicago. The traffic began to tighten. Other cars were zipping past us and approaching our rear fast. I tried to stay in the limit but decided it was safer to just speed up with the general flow of traffic. Driving like there's-no-speed-limit reminded me of similar conditions in the Metro Manila hiways. No wonder some people are "allergi...

Filipino-Asian Donors Wanted

The following appeal was brought up during the Linn County Fil-Am Association picnic held at Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area, Palo, IA.

Twelve-year-old Greg Hachey, the youngest son of Mark and Cora Hachey of Puyallup, WA is fighting for his life, as family and friends in Iowa search desperately for a bone marrow donor that is a match for him. Greg suffers from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia for which the only known cure is a bone marrow or stem cell transplant from a suitable donor. The son of a Caucasian father and a Filipino mother, Greg's search for a match has been complicated by the nature of marrow tissue type matching and the lack of Asians registered as donors.

Just as we inherit our eyes, hair and skin color, we inherit our bone marrow in the same manner. When a patient is looking for a donor, his best possible chance to find a suitable donor is through his own ethnic community. Unfortunately, the small number of Asian Americans listed in the National Marrow Dono...
